A History of Cruising Innovations

Our story began more than half a century ago when Norwegian Caribbean Line was founded by Norway’s oldest and most respected shipping company. In 1966, we made a groundbreaking maiden voyage with 550 passengers that changed how the world viewed holidays at sea. No longer simply a means of transportation, the ship became a destination unto itself, offering guests an exciting, affordable alternative to land-based resorts. As the cruise industry began to gain popularity, Norwegian led the way with its introduction of a fleet of sleek, new “white ships” in the late 60s and early 70s and continued to add capacity and expand itineraries throughout the next two decades. Norwegian Caribbean Line became Norwegian Cruise Line in 1987 to reflect an expanded route structure. Throughout the 90s the company continued to expand its fleet with newer and larger vessels built to replace the now retired “white ships.”

1960s

NCL’s journey began in 1966 as Norwegian Caribbean Lines, the first cruise line to offer weekly departures to the Caribbean. The Company then began launching its fleet of sleek, white ships making regular calls to exotic island ports.

1970s

The 70s were an era of expansion and growth for the Company. In 1977, the company purchased Great Stirrup Cay, becoming the first cruise line to offer a private “out island” experience.

1980s

In 1984 Norwegian Caribbean Lines purchased Royal Viking Line and in 1987 it changed its name to Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) to reflect an expanded route structure.

1990s

Throughout the 1990s NCL continued to expand and focus on an increasing array of destinations as it retired its classic white ships. As it ushered in a new generation of ships, two ships the Norwegian Dream and Norwegian Wind underwent extensive reconstructions with each ship stretched 130 feet with the largest “mid-body” inserts done in the industry. The 1990s also marked a series of other firsts including the first WiFi capabilities on a cruise ship and later cell phone service fleetwide even while ships were at sea.

2000

In February 2000, Norwegian Cruise Line was acquired by Genting Hong Kong Limited (formerly Star Cruises Ltd.) for approximately $1.8 billion. Following the acquisition, Star Cruises became the third largest cruise line in the world and launched an expansion program of new ships, onboard improvements and innovative itineraries.

In May 2000, Norwegian Cruise Line introduced Freestyle Cruising® , a revolutionary product offering that provided guests freedom and flexibility in a cruise vacation for a more relaxed, resort-style vacation experience versus traditional cruising.

2001

The first purpose-built Freestyle Cruising® ship was built in 2001 and due to the company’s unique capability to deliver this product offering and its tremendous success, all newbuilds since have been purpose-built for Freestyle Cruising®.

2007

In August 2007, we sold a 50 percent ownership stake in Norwegian Cruise Line to private equity groups Apollo Management, LP and TPG Capital for a $1 billion cash equity investment. The investment closed on January 7, 2008.

2013

In January 2013, we completed our initial public offering and listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange, trading under the ticker symbol “NCLH”. We sold 27.1 million shares for net proceeds of approximately $477.64 million. Our IPO was a huge success and priced above the range. Post-IPO, all three sponsors sold down their stakes and exited their long-term investments by year-end 2018.

2014

In November 2014, we acquired Prestige Cruises International, Inc., the parent company of Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, in a cash and stock transaction for $3.025 billion, including the assumption of debt. This transaction diversified our portfolio to include three award-winning, global cruise brands.

Today

We are a leading global cruise company operating world-renowned cruise brands: Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Our combined fleet of 33 ships carries millions of guests to approximately 700 destinations across the globe. Our future is bright, and we will be introducing twelve new ships across our three brands through 2036.
